Haiyuan Private Library in Liaocheng City Shandong Province is one of the four most famous private libraries in Qing Dynasty with a large amount of graceful and brilliant ancient books and secret versions. The current research on this private library has achieved systematic result, but there is still a lack of thematic study in certain field. This research systematically studied the ancient and rare medical books in Haiyuan Private Library by means of textual research and historical research including methods of statistics, catalog version of literature, etc. It clarified the quantity and the accurate bibliography of ancient medical books from the Yangs, summarized the characteristics of medical books collection as well as the corresponding collecting thoughts in order to reconstruct the historical appearance of Haiyuan Private Library. Meanwhile, this research investigated the destination of existing medical books and traced the clues of the loss with the visit and descriptive catalogue in the aspect of high-value ancient rare edition. It aimed to measure the value of academic literature of medical editions in Haiyuan Private Library and study the positive significance to the protection of rare medical books thanks to contribution from the Yangs in order to promote the preservation, exploitation and academic application for existing ancient medical books from Haiyuan Private Library and also stimulate the inheritance and development of Traditional Chinese Medicine academy.The results of this research were summarized as follows:1.There were eighty-seven kinds of ancient medical books ever collected in Haiyuan Private Library according to the records,including four kinds of Song editions,six kinds of Yuan editions,twenty-two kinds of Ming editions,forty-two kinds of Qing editions,seven kinds of transcript editions and six kinds of unknown editions.It was clarified that actually three kinds of Song editions and twenty-three kinds of Ming editions were collected in this private library,totally one hundred and fourteen books,one thousand two hundred and ninety-six volumes if counting as a single book.2.The collection of Haiyuan Private Library had the version features of emphasis on the Song and Yuan Dynasties medical books,high-value rare editions,brilliant versions read and kept by celebrities and various editions for the same book,as well as academic characteristics of more attention to classic,clinical and practical medical books,especially herbal prescriptions,maternal and pediatric health care and comprehensive masterpieces,which reflected the thoughts of collection servicing practice and collection for generations.3.By the literature and field investigation,it traced the destination of twenty-six kinds of existing ancient books:five kinds of ancient books in National Library,nineteen kinds books in Shandong Provincial Library,one kind in Ji’nan City Library and one kind in Kyo-U Library(杏雨书屋),Japan.4.According to the existing books,Descriptive Catalogue of High-value Medical Editions in Haiyuan Private Library was reprinted including Pulse Classic(Mai Jing,脉经)in Ming Dynasty,Revised Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases(Chong Kan Chao Shi Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Zong Lun,重刊巢氏诸病源候总论)in Yuan Dynasty,Classified Daguan Materia Medica from Historical Classics(Jing Shi Zheng Lei Da Guan Ben Cao,经史证类大观本草)in South Song Jiading Period by LIU Jia,which summarized the present versions of catalogue and research and analyzed the value and significance.5.It investigated the current research and academic application of the existing ancient medical books and analyzed two problems in the application of medical editions of Haiyuan Private Library.
