In recent years, automotive industry production and sales keep increasing in China. As one of the four major automobile manufacturing processes, it is essential to expand production capacity to meet market demand. Therefore, study on automobile paint shop hazards is significant. After studying the coating process and the use of hazardous materials adequately, use fault tree analysis (FTA), the operating conditions of risk analysis methods (LEC) and Dow method to analyze hazards in typical coating process. Then, analyze the reasons that may cause an accident semi-quantitatively. Based on the analysis and evaluations, control measures are given to all kinds of accidents that may occur in paint shop. The research shows that the most dangerous unit in the paint shop is the spraying chamber; electric injuries and falling accidents are with higher risk in Pretreatment; fire accident, chemical injuries and electric injuries are with higher risk in painting process. An experiment was taken to test levels of benzene series, noise and vibration in a paint shop. For benzene series levels, sampling with a solvent-based analytical tube on site, and then analyzing in the laboratory by gas chromatography. For noise and vibration levels, measuring with instruments directly on site. Results show that concentrations of benzene series in some areas in the spray booth exceed the allowable value. Noise over proof occurs in polishing section, and vibration over proof happens in grinding. Based on the test, specific protective measures are given for the occupational hazards in automotive paint shop.According to the results of the experiment, the spray booth has been redesigned to improve the ventilation plan, including ventilation mode, ventilation quantity, hydraulic calculations and CAD plane graph. Through design calculation, the advantages of push-pull ventilation system used in spray booth are analyzed. Meanwhile, some safety measures are proposed for ventilation. After that, using ANSYS FLUENT to simulate the airflow situation of two different inlet methods, namely square inlet and slot shaped inlet.
