Objective: The close integration between the humanity and scientificity of medical education is the inexorable trend of medical education reform and development. In the research, based on the experience related to autonomous and cooperative learning at home and abroad, and under the guidance of relevant theories, ―Extracurricular Autonomous-Cooperative Learning Model‖ which is an extracurricular teaching activity management program is designed and carried out to improve the independent and cooperative learning abilities of the rural-oriented medical students. Methods: In the research, 122 rural-oriented medical students from Chongqing Medical University, giving the top support for autonomous-cooperative learning activities were selected to form an action group for an action research lasting for a period of a semester in accordance with the ―Extracurricular Autonomous-Cooperative Learning Model‖. The autonomous learning capacity and cooperative learning satisfaction of rural-oriented medical students in action group before and after the test were looked into and known by questionnaire. And their opinions on autonomous-cooperative learning model were collected by means of live interview. Finally, SPSS17.0 was used to make a statistical description and chi-square test on their autonomous learning capacity and cooperative learning satisfaction and t-test was made on their final performance in action group and matched group.Results:1. 90% of the rural-oriented medical students(108 students) expressed their ―general or higher support‖ for the Extracurricular Autonomous-Cooperative Learning Model, with a total scoring rate of 68.6% including 66.4% for male and 70.2% for female.2. The total scores of the autonomous learning capacity of the rural-oriented medical students in action group before and after the test were respectively 3.22 and 3.48, with a scoring rate of 64.4% and 69.6% respectively.3. The total satisfaction on the cooperative learning capacity of the rural-oriented medical students in action group before and after the test were respectively 3.37 and 3.65, with a scoring rate of 67.4% and 73% respectively.4. After the test, the average scores of Internal Medicine of the rural-oriented medical students in action group and matched group were respectively 74.6 and 72.3; and t-test result showed that t=2.377, p=0.018<0.05. And, the average scores of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the rural-oriented medical students in action group and matched group were respectively 76.2 and 73.6; and t-test result showed that t=2.808, P=0.005<0.05.Conclusion: With respect to the effectiveness of autonomous – cooperative learning model, it has many advantages. It assists the rural-oriented medical students in strengthening autonomous learning management and correcting their study attitude. It helps to clarify the external learning goals to enhance their learning motivation. It contributes to grasp the scientific learning methods to improve their learning interest and efficiency accordingly. It conduces to promote learning exchange to improve their oral communication skills. It gets them a better academic performance and clinical skills to relieve their examination anxiety and learning pressure. And it severs the purpose of cultivating team spirit and enhancing their friendship as well as developing a good character and medical humane accomplishment. Meanwhile, the model has some shortcomings. For instance, the rural-oriented medical students are short of the independent learning plan awareness due to ineffective instructions. It‘s difficult for them to do further study because of inadequate guiding from teachers. They repel the burdensome examination system and have a poor learning efficiency due to impact of habitual thinking.
