Before the modern transportation was developed, the development and utilization ofwater transportation is an important symbol of economic development. Through out thehuman history, transportation has always been an important locational factor which issignificant to the regional economic development. From the traffic and regional economiccooperative development point of view, this paper expounds the relationship between thewaterway and Baoding regional economic development after Tianjin port was open.The water transportation of Baoding area was well developed since ancient times. Eachdynasty had attached importance to the development and utilization of water transportation,but as a gold channel, the value of it has been embodied. Since Tianjin port was open in1860,Tianjin and mainland contact become closer and closer, the role of water transportation ismore and more important.At the beginning of the twentieth century, along with the coming of the railroads andmodern highway, modern transportation becomes a great challenge to the traditional watertransportation. However, in Baoding, the station of water transportation of the importantposition did not change. The water transportation still hold a leading post in the transportmarket. The prosperity of the water transportation promotes the development of urban andrural economy. In the countryside, a large inflow of industrial and agricultural products andoutflow of sideline products, make the structure of production change. In order to adaptto the market needs, rural economic crops have somewhat expanded, agricultural andsideline products has developed. The rural commodity economy is quite different thanbefore. In city, a large number of foreign goods, TuHuo input and output brought theprosperity of commodity trade, commodity economy.The water transportation communicated the urban and rural area, promoted thedevelopment of the urban and rural economy, therefore, a transportation network of Baodingand surrounding area formed.
