China is a country of splendid poetry. Tang poetry is the gem of this treasurehouse. Unfortunately, poor quality of foreign translations of Tang poetry and a lack ofpractical principle deprive foreign readers from understanding Chinese traditionalculture, and further undermine the promotion of Chinese culture and culturalexchanging with other countries. The present thesis intends to examine the CulturalUntranslatability in Tang poetry translation through a comparative study on theEnglish, Spanish and German versions of Li Bai’s Carouse. Based on the detailedanalysis about the existence of cultural untranslatability, namely ecological culture, material culture and social culture, in the three versions of Li Bai’s Carouse, theauthor concludes that “cultural itimacy” is an ideal and practical principle forhandling the cltural untranslatability in Tang poetry translation. At the end of thethesis, the author also puts forward some practical approaches and strategies, such asrewriting, domestication and annotaion for dealing with the cultural untranslatability,in order to improve the quality of Tang poetry translation and to better promote thecultural exchange between China and the other countries of the world.
