Chinese-english Translation Of Political Publicity From The Perspective Of German Functionalism-a Case Study Of2011China’s Peaceful Development

Since the reform and opening-up policy was introduced in1978, China hasopened its door much wider to the outside world, attracting more attention offoreigners. However, ignorance of political information about China still exists. One ofthe reasons may lie in that C-E translation of political publicity fails to act as a bridgeto publicize China. In light of this, trying to avoid the current trend of studyingpolitical publicity translation merely from a practical perspective, the author of thisthesis intends to study it from a new point of view under the guidance of Germanfunctionalism.The author conducts a qualitative research, adopting a comparative analyticalcase-study method to study C-E translation of political publicity. With2011China’sPeaceful Development as a subject, the author applies the main concepts of GermanFunctionalism into this study, summarizes the frequently used methods in thetranslation， such as addition, deletion, subordination, restructuring and literaltranslation and tentatively proposes three principles, namely, faithfulnessreader-orientedness and ideology consciousness, hoping to bring an enlightenment inthis regard.After a thorough analysis of the source text (ST), the author of this thesis arrivesat the conclusion: German functionalist approaches are feasible to guide thedecision-making process as well as the whole working process of C-E translation ofpolitical publicity. It does not only provide a new perspective for the research andpractice on practical translation but more importantly, serves as a solid foundation forChinese political publicity translation.
