English film title translation (EFTT) has been a hot research field in recentyears. Film, as the most popular form of recreation and entertainment for people andmeanwhile, the most common form of popular culture, plays an important role inpeople’s life. Excellent translations of film titles would not only realize films’commercial value but also enhance the understanding among people with differentcultures. The unique features of film titles such as linguistic, cultural, and aestheticfeatures, as well as the commercial value that films are born to fulfill, make film titletranslation different from other translations and more challenging for translators. Inaddition,“treason†always occurs during EFTT when the translated versions aretotally unfaithful to the original ones. Thus many scholars have devoted themselves tothe study of EFTT. They have made great contributions to this field. However, thisresearch field still lacks systematic studies and few people apply meme variation ofmemetics into this problem. Given the situation that meme variation is prevalentduring EFTT and memetics has a great potential and applicability in translationstudies, this thesis will focus on the meme variation in EFTT under the “threedimensions†of Eco-translatology and try to reveal the basic rule (relevance to thefilm’s content) of meme variation, criteria of successful variation(distinctiveness, associability, brevity, novelty and coherence), and a macro-method of meme variationin EFTT(variation should be done in linguistic and culture dimensions, which willcontribute to the success in communicational dimension). |
