A Study Of Metaphor In Right Bank Of The Argun

Right Bank of the Argun, one of the award-winning works of the Seventh MaoDun Literature Award, is an excellent novel in its own right. Since the book was firstbrought out it has been well received by the readers and the critics and also hasattracted considerable scholarly attention. So far until now, the researches of thisnovel are organized around these areas: Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature,Folklore, Literature and Art and so on. But there is still a lack of studies in perspectiveof Linguistics.The Language of Right Bank of the Argun is very characteristic and especiallythe metaphors are quite remarkable. The use of metaphors makes the whole workpresents a strong rustic flavor and shows the beauty in meaning.The article, from the linguistic perspective, discusses the metaphors in RightBank of the Argun. This article is delivered in a division-and-integration mode.Chapter two, three and four cover the studies of type, noumenon and implication. Andthen the following content analyses their own regular patterns and points out thecharacters. These findings suggest that the application of metaphor is present in ageneral way and the similes are in the majority, which show out very a strongcolloquial character. The noumenons and implications are various. In the noumenons,the group of characters is in the majority and it represents the author’s concept ofharmony between nature and human. The noumenons are also characterized bytypicalness, concreteness, the balance between the concise beauty and the complexbeauty. In the implication part, those enjoy close association with nature are in themajority, such as animals, plants, natural phenomenons and natural materials. Thesekinds of implications show out the characters of typicalness, morbidezza,distinctiveness and symbolism. In chapter five, with a wide vision, we study thecharacters of metaphor from two sides, one is about the content and form, the other isabout the rhetoric function. On one hand, the author widens the distance betweennoumenon and implication on purpose to achieve some particular effect. On the otherhand, the metaphors are used to depict sceneries, create characters, interpret the themeand join the plots. They bring good visual effect, express emotion and show thecharacters of philosophy and suggestiveness.In this thesis, for breaking the regular rules, we analyze and conclude the text, do both qualitative and quantitative research, count and analyze the data, annotateinformation. Through these studies, we hope this thesis could fill a gap in thelinguistics research of Right Bank of the Argun and provide some references for otherscholars.
