With the cultural and economic development of China, an increasing number offoreigners have started to learn Chinese. It is found that writing Chinese characters is achallenging task. Scholars have analyzed the reason of overseas students’ writing errors,and try to find efficient way for them to learn Chinese characters.Overseas students’ Chinese characters writing errors have striking characters thatare universality and persistence. The main errors of overseas students are different whenthey get in different stages of learning. The actual situation of their writing errors canreflect the problem of Chinese characters teaching and learning. It is meaningful tomake a study on overseas students’ Chinese characters writing errors, because it canprovide guidance for the related teaching.Based on the former research, this paper takes the overseas students’ compositionsin the HSK dynamic composition corpus as the example. Through analyzing thecollected writing errors, this paper aims to summarize the main problem of overseasstudents’ writing errors. This study includes300compositions. The author collects allwriting errors in these compositions and divides them into “wrong words” and “otherwords”. Quantitative and qualitative analysis shows that the main problems of overseasstudents’ writing errors are components error and similar-shaped-characters error.Following the analysis, reasons are discussed in the paper. All reasons can be dividedinto three parts: the characteristics of Chinese characters, teachers’ teaching strategiesand the students’ learning methods. Lastly, the author proposes corresponding teachingstrategies and principles which based on the problems of overseas students’ writingerrors.All in all, this paper makes analysis on two kinds of errors:“wrong words” and“other words”. Its aims to have a better understanding of overseas students’ Chinesecharacters learning and distinguish between “can’t write” and “write other words”.Through this method teachers can find students’ weakness on Chinese characterswriting, and then teaching in an effective way.
