A Study On Language Usage Of Kazakh Residents In Yining, Xinjiang Under Multilingual Environment

In the process of the development of human language, language contact is oneof the very common phenomenon. It can be used to describe the contact betweendifferent ethnic groups of all kinds of language change, and can also be used to studythe relationship between languages, a method studying the human cultural evolutionprocess. This paper using relevant theory and research method of social linguistics,language contact as the research background, language use and language attitude asthe researching field,Kazak residents of Xinjiang Yining city as the researchobject,and the questionnaire combined with and interview was conducted.This article is divided into five parts, the first part: introduction, mainlyexpounds the research background of the thesis, the selected topic reason, theresearch purpose and meaning, as well as to comb the overview of the research statusat home and abroad. The second part: through the questionnaire on kazakh cityresidents to investigate the usage of language in daily communication, first of all tothe composition and content of the questionnaire to make a simple instructions, andthen the basic situation of investigation and description, deals with in-depthinterviews, and observation of residents in different occasions and different groupsand communication objects of daily conversation, which was recorded. Theinvestigation and analysis of the collected corpus, the feature of language wascharacterised by the results of the survey. This chapter is the core part of the paper.The third part: from the behavior tendency, willingness to learn, social status andpractical function, expect several aspects, such as description of languagedevelopment prospect of Yining city’s Kazak residents language attitude. The forthpart: the simple description language occurring in the process of using language useand combination phenomenon, analysis of the factors involved in language use. Thefifth part: summarizing the thesis.Through the survey we found that most of Yining city’s kazak residents arebilingual or multilingual. Overall Chinese level is higher, their native language ismainly used in the family, in the multinational residents frequency of using otherlanguage is high, and there are many reasons which could explain this phenomenon.Language environment, around the family, school, and the media,is the major factorthat influences their language use. During the survey we found the phenomenon ofcode-switching and using loaned words. In addition, the study of language attitude, according to the results of Kazak residents about the feelings of mother tongue isdeeper, and the have high recognition for Chinese and foreign language, a more openattitude in language use.This study enriched the social linguistics research and it can provide thecountry’s language policy,bilingual policy formulation and implementation ofbilingual teaching with certain reference basis. At the same time it can add anexample to Kazak language study, as well as provide the prediction for the languagedevelopment trend.
