Research On Uygur Surnay Of Turpan In Xinjiang

Surnay, a kind of music instrument with double reed, is widely popular in thefolk world in Asia, Africa, Europe and many other countries in other continents ofthe world. Turpan is one important city on the ancient Silk Road, as an importantmilitary, political, economic, and cultural center. Actually, it’s also the hub of tradeand cultural exchanges between Xinjiang and China, Central Asia and Europe. It’snot only one historic city but also one famous cultural city which combines easternand western cultures. After transmitted into Turpan, Surnay serves its musicalculture and then became one of the important Uighur ethnic instruments in Turpan.Affected by the multiculture of Turpan, Surnay Art presents a diverse characteristics.Currently, there are few in-depth researches on Uighur Surnay in Xinjiang.Based on the author’s personal study, practice and field research, this paper made acomprehensive research and analysis and put forward some new ideas, which usesthe knowledge of ethnomusicology, music history, musical instruments andanthropology. The text is divided into seven parts:Part I：Introduction, describes the origin of the topic. Based on the results ofprevious studies on Surnay in Turpan, according to the author of the learningexperience and field survey data, the paper presents the main ideas and researchmethod.Part II: an overview of the background information related to Surnay such asthe geographical environment, history, language, ethnics, religion and developmentof music culture, and made some sort with a brief analysis that Surnay reflects theTurpan Uyghur multicultural characteristics.PartⅢ: comprehensive study on Uygur Surnay of Turpan. Firstly, a briefanalysis is made on the review history of Uygur Surnay of Turpan. Then, carry out athorough analysis on the shape,the way of inheritance, Craft making of Surnay.Based on the above, a presentation and analysis is made on the cases of folk musicartists which come from the fieldwork of author.PartⅣ: study on the Artistic Characteristics of instrumental music of Surnay.The material sources of music repertoires, features of music melody structure,musical performance technique, emotional features of melodies and so on are illustrated in detail, and detailed demonstration by local music repertoires.PartⅤ: Analysis of the music cultural ecology which relate to Uygur Surnay ofTurpan.Exemplify all aspects of the part which Surnay take in the cultural life ofTurpan,and carry out certain analysis.PartⅥ：rational consideration on the development of Uygur Surnay of Turpan.The suggestions are put forward after author analyzed all the questions whichdiscovered in the fieldwork.PartⅦ: conclusion. A brief conclusion is made according to the whole article.It’s known that Uygur Surnay instrumental art of Turpan has deeply rooted in thefolk, and has indivisible close association with the cultural environment whichco-existence with it including geographical environment, religious custom, human’sdaily life activities, it present a more diversity music culture characteristics. It’spointed out that the development of Surnay confronted with both good opportunitiesand severe crisis. It’s proposed that Surnay instrumental art ought to surveyed fromthe perspective of culture, which requires the government, aerophone artist, educatorand scientific researcher of school and cultural workers should take efforts in theinheritance of Uygur Surnay instrumental art of Turpan, and meet the demands oflocal people, from the perspective of the mass.
