The New plan is the first episode of the contemporary fiction Fergyville, which waswritten by French Canadian writer Katina Ferguson and was published in2011. Thisnovelette mainly tells a story of a new couple with three children. The new couplewas worn out by the three children and daily stressful job. They were eager to comeup with new ways to manage their family life. This story reflects young people’sheavy life pressure and their expectation to have an easy life in modern society.Recently, there is no published Chinese version of this novelette; the writer haschosen the first episode to translate into Chinese and done a research on the problemsarising during the translating process. The writer mainly focuses on the issue of howto cope with the parentheses of the source text during the translating process.A lot of parentheses were employed in the source text by the author, and thatcaused the toughest problem for the translator (namely the writer). How to deal withthe parentheses, keep it or delete it or replace it with other punctuations? Thetranslator thought it over and did a thorough research on that issue. The writer firstlystudied the correct usage of parenthesis of English and Chinese, then compared themand found the differences. Based on the prior study, the writer found out all theparentheses on the source text, and sorted them out according to their usage. Finally, the writer concluded three proper translating methods to cope with the parentheses. This translation report consists of four parts: task description, process description, case analysis and conclusion. The task description mainly introduces the source text, its author, and the reason to choose it as translating material. The process descriptionrespectively presents the pre-translating preparation, the problems arising during thetranslation and proofreading of the target text. The third part focuses on the analysisof the specific cases and explores the proper way to dealt with. Through the report, thewriter aims to conclude the ways to translate the contents in the parenthesis intoChinese.
