The source text is Minerals Resource Rent Tax(Consequential Amendments and Transitional Provisions)Act 2012 of Australia(Schedule 1)and it is a legal text.It is the amendments and transitional provisions of Minerals Resource Rent Tax Act 2012 of Australia,which made rules for taxation on iron ore,coal and certain derivatives of the commodities.Due to the high seriousness and preciseness of legal text,the author must translate the original text accurately and carefully,using more than one translation principles in the process of translation for the correspondent seriousness and preciseness,and this problem evokes her choosing Zhang Falian's four basic principles of legal translation as accurate,concise,consistent and standardized for the practice guidance of legal translation.She also chooses Eugene A.Nida's back-transformation translation theory for analysis and proofreading.This thesis consists of four parts.Part 1 is the description of translation task,including reasons for selecting the source text and features of the source text.Part 2 is the description of translation process,including the preparation before translation,process of translation and proofreading.Part 3 is the case study,including lexical level,syntactical level and textual level.In the lexical level,it includes translation of legal terms,ordinary words with legal meanings,vague words,model verbs and prepositional phrases.Vocabularies are the foundation of sentences and the quality of the translation can be ensured only they are translated accurately.The legal translation from the lexical level draws the points as accurate translation,concise translation and consistent translation.In the syntactical level,it includes translation of “If” directed sentences,“For the purpose of” directed sentences and “Subject to” directed sentences.Directed by the legal translation principles and theory in the above,the author draws the translation skills as the legal pattern following,the restructured legal sentence translation and more formal and standardized resolutions.In the textual level,it includes translation of mandatory sentences,prohibitory sentences and authorized sentences.There are many mandatory,prohibitory and authorized sentences in legal texts worthy being restored accurately in legal Chinese.The author applied Zhang Falian's four basic principles of legal translation and Eugene A.Nida's back-transformation translation theory,making the translation more professional,more legally logic and much closer to the legal document source.Part 4 is the conclusion of this report,including tentative conclusion,unsolved problems and relevant thinking,and inspiration and prospect for future legal translation study and work.Through this translation project,the author hopes to improve her translation competence and skills of legal texts,she also hopes to provide some advice for other translators who translate legal texts.
