With the development of modern society and the increasing communication in the ways of politics, economics, technology, business and culture, legal translation is becoming more and more important. Everyone should abide by the law when they do something, resulting in any activity that involves foreign issues will generate certain recessive and dominant legal issues. Due to the different description of legal provisions in different countries, legal translators should acquire both the translation and legal knowledge as well as legal expressions so as to better perform the functional equivalence between the source language and target language. Legal translation is actually a communicative process among different legal systems. Comparing to other translation theories, legal translation theory is somewhat underdeveloped. Although many legal translators have introduced certain concrete methods, there is still not a generalized theory or a principle that can be applied to guide the translators.This report introduces the development of functionalist translation theory and displays the superiority of the theory. Besides following the rules and characteristics of legal language, the basic purpose of legal translation is to fulfill its legal function. The report displays the author‘s understanding to the reasonability and feasibility of the application of functionalist translation theory into practice by means of listing numbers of examples, hoping to help other legal translators.
