Application Of Parallel Text In The Science And Technology Translation

This thesis is written based on the translation of Oil Shale Exploitation in theUnited State from the proceedings of Shale Gas: A Practitioner’s Guide to Shale Gasand Other Unconventional Resources, which was published in2012by Globe BusinessPublishing Group. It focuses on the application of parallel text in the translation ofpetroleum science and technology under the direction of skopos theory, and illustratesthe significance of parallel text in science and technology translation.Translation plays an important role in our society and promotes its progress. And itis a channel that links the engineers from the world together. The translation is a scienceand technology thesis translation, from English to Chinese. The original text involvesmany terminologies and fixed structures and sentences, and its content includes oil shaledevelopment, mineral science, land rights and environmental protection laws andregulations. Therefore, the translation task is very challenging.Therefore, in order to complete the translation effectively and efficiently, atranslator who has little knowledge of the relevant fields can consult the parallel texts.By learning the parallel texts, the translator can find out the exact words, expressionsand sentences for the target text. And the application of parallel text in science andtechnology translation can improve the translator’s understandings and perfect the work.This thesis divides into four chapters. Chapter1gives a brief review of thetranslation history and its significance. Chapter2describes the translation project andthe criteria of translation. Chapter3focuses on the difficulties and problems appearingin the translation process, analyzes the application of parallel text in words translationand sentence translation. And Chapter4summarizes the practical significance ofparallel text and reviews the translator’s experience from this project.
