The Strategy Of Referring To Parallel Text In Exposition

This thesis is an E-C translation report.The text that the thesis is based on is from a book entitled Positive Dog Training,which is an exposition about positive ways of dog training,as well as some relevant training theories.The book is highly professionalized with dog training knowledge and focuses on facts.The language style of this book is generally easy and lively with sentences like 'What is this clicker training thing?It's not the dog,sill!' and so on.There are,however,certain formal professional expressions like'Approximations are small steps that make up a final behavior;splitting behaviors means breaking them into many small steps and having the dog master one before going on to the next',in which not only the language is formal but terms are used.Therefore,when translating,the author should pay due attention to both language style and term.During the translation practice,the author notices that because of lacking background information,some seemingly simple sentences will be translated into nonsense if translated literally.In addition,though the vocabularies used in some long sentences are simple,without careful diction and organization of word order,it is still difficult to translate them into fluent and decent Chinese.Besides,by referring to several theses,the author learns about that parallel texts are texts with similar communicative function in different language cultures.Since they have similar communicative function,parallel texts,in this case,should play a major role in the translation practice.So,this thesis analyzes the supporting role of parallel texts from three aspects,which are respectively terms,background knowledge and writing style.In short,referring to parallel texts can greatly improve the quality of translation,and is applicable and useful in other texts of this kind.
