In the process of translation, the author makes references to Parallel Text tosolve such problems as getting an in-depth knowledge of the original text, confirmingthe terminology, acquiring idiomatic expressions, and giving a translation with itsstyle similar to that of texts in target context. Therefore, it is necessary to draw on theexperience of applying Parallel Text.In the report, the author takes the translation of Navigating the Teaching of Artand Hualong City Hotel Brochure as case study. Both texts are non-literary.Navigating the Teaching of Art covers a wide array of subjects such as art teaching, history of art, aesthetics, and philosophy; in addition, a large number of artists andworks of art are mentioned. In translating, the difficulties lie in acquiring specificknowledge about these fields to deepen the understanding of the source text andconfirmining the terminology. As for Hualong City Hotel Brochure, it is a C-Etranslation. However, English is not the author’s mother tongue; besides, the intendedstyle of Target Text is different from that of Source Text. Therefore, the difficulties arethat how to give an idiomatic writing and a translation with a style appropriate inTarget Text context. The roles Parallel Texts play in the translation of these twomaterials embody the application of Parallel Texts in four aspects. That is why theauthor chooses the two translation materials rather than one for the discussions of theapplication of Parallel Texts in both C-E and E-C translation. In the report, Parallel Text acts as the thread of this report. The author has given adetailed description of the translation procedure, including such stages as preparationbefore translating, finishing the draft, revising, and assessing, and in particular, therevising process in reference to Parallel Text is described in detail. One chapter isspent in studying the application of Parallel Text. Through comparing and contrastingthe texts before and after consulting Parallel Text, the application of Parallel Text isillustrated. By citing the examples from the translation of Navigating the Teaching ofArt, the author intends to illustrate how the Parallel Text is referenced to helptranslator get specific knowledge and terminology in E-C translation. By citingexamples from the translation of Hualong City Hotel Brochure, the author shows howthe Parallel Text is used to help translators absorb idiomatic expressions and imitatethe style in target language context in C-E translation. In the end, the relevance andauthoritativeness of Parallel Text are emphasized in the process of applying Parallel Texts. That is to say, one should guarantee the Parallel Texts are relevant to source ortarget texts. Furthermore, the Parallel Texts should be authoritative. As the report reveals, first, in E-C translation, it is necessary to consult ParallelText so as to deepen the understanding of the original text and confirm the correctnessof the terminology; in C-E translation, it is necessary to consult Parallel Text so as togive a correct and smooth translation product by absorbing idiomatic expressions andimitating the style in target language situation. Second, although consulting ParallelTexts is conducive to translating, this can be otherwise if we pay no attention to therelevance and authoritativeness of Parallel Texts. However, Parallel Text is not apanacea for all translation problems. Personally speaking, the report leads to author’sbetter understanding of the application of Parallel Text. It is hoped that the ParallelText could provide some valuable reference for translators when Parallel Text isemployed by them.
