The Use Of Parallel Text In Translation Of Tilting At Windmills: Public-private Partnerships In Indian Education Today

Pragmatic translation has attracted great attention in recent years. Different fromliterary works, practical writings have a broad application to all kinds of areas. Due tothe technical terms, the tight-knit structure and large amount of information, apractical article seems difficult for the translators who have limited knowledge ofvarious professions. Recently, however, as the development of technical tools (theInternet, online dictionaries, etc.) in translation, the quantity and quality of pragmatictranslation has been greatly improved. This thesis, by analyzing the translationprocess of an educational text, is going to discuss the application and usage of paralleltexts in pragmatic translation.Parallel texts have been used in machine translation since1980s and have a deeprelation with Skopos theory, popular at that time. According to the Skopos theory, atranslation process should conform to one or more aims. Different aims of translationwill lead to different translating strategies. The most important factor that influence agood translation is the target readers, which requires the translation be compatible tothe communicative context of the target readers and satisfy their needs andexpectations. Parallel texts, including any reference works related to the original text,can make up for the translators’ lack of professional knowledge, help the translatorslearn the conventions and expressions of the target language so as to better serve thetarget readers.But the practical application of parallel texts still has some problems such as theslow development, less importance and unauthentic sources. The translator who wantsto take this thesis as a research points out three areas that parallel texts could be usedin order to solve these problems.First of all, as for the proper nouns in the original article, the translator mainlytakes advantage of Google search box to find out the parallel texts that are related to these words and then choose the most popular and authentic ones.Second, when faced with the technical words, by reading relevant materials, thetranslator acquires professional knowledge and idiomatic expression of theprofessional field. These translations, if necessary, also need to be checked againthrough Google to make sure their acceptance and validity.At last, the similar expressions of some sentences, even paragraphs, can also befound among parallel texts, most of which are articles people published on all kinds ofjournals. The translator, taking the cultural background of the target readers intoconsideration, applies the original sentences from those relevant materials as hertranslation or add some extra meaning to make the translation more acceptable to thetarget readers.
