| The term ‘implicational impoliteness’ was proposed by Jonathan Culpeper, the chiefeditor of Journal of Pragmatics, in2011. We analyze the implicational impolitenessutterances in Fortress besieged with Culpeper’s (2011) model. The present researchapproaches impoliteness utterances in Fortress besieged attempting to reveal how isimplicational impoliteness actually realized in Fortress besieged, and to demonstrate thatimpoliteness phenomena is not simply some kind of pragmatic failure.This thesis is organized into six chapters. Chapter One briefly introduces the backgroundof the present research. Chapter Two presents a literature review of Fortress besieged, whichprovides a basis for the discussions in the subsequent chapters. The literature review includesthe background, the plot of Fortress besieged, and also a brief overview of the previousresearches on Fortress besieged in a chronological order. In Chapter Three we have fullydiscussed the theoretical foundation of the present research. This chapter introduces anintegrated soci-cognitive model of impoliteness, implicational impoliteness and the functionsof impoliteness for the present research. Chapter Four and Chapter Five are the key of thewhole paper. We categorize the implication impoliteness utterances in Fortress besieged intoform-driven, convention-driven and context-driven proposed by Culpeper, and then give adetailed analysis and elaboration. We also discuss the literary functions of implicationimpoliteness utterances in Fortress besieged in this section. Chapter Six is the conclusion ofthe present research, in which the main point of the thesis will be summarized, the limitationsof the thesis will be explored and some suggestions for the further research on this area willbe presented.Researching implicational impoliteness will broaden our current understanding ofimpoliteness. Politeness theories can only be complete when impoliteness is considered. |
