The idiom subsidiary meaning is an important part of idiom semantics. However, so far, there arenot many academic researches on idioms subsidiary meaning in academic circles. In this paper, theidioms subsidiary meaning is the object of study, and the research includes in the classification, thecauses, development and change, and the use.The first chapter introduces the background and the significance of the research, reviews theexisting research, and introduces the research methods of this paper.The second chapter describes the idiom subsidiary meaning concept, classification, and relationshipbetween the meanings of each subsidiary idiom. The idiom subsidiary meaning includes the colormeaning of the image, the color meaning of the emotion, the color meaning of the language style andthe color meaning of the nation. The subsidiary meaning of one idioms includes equal relationship orunequal relationship. In addition, this chapter also emphasizes on comparing subsidiary meaningcharacteristics of idioms and words.The third chapter introduces the reasons for the formation of the each idiom subsidiary meaning.Language styleof the spoken color mainly causes by the three aspects of objective factors, subjectivefactors or the language factor. The emotional color meaning is mainly derogatory, and it also causes bythree aspects, in which psychological factors are particularly important. The color meaning of image hasextensive features. Formation of thecolor meaning of the nation includes the impact of the objective things or phenomena, the impact ofnational characteristics and national psychology, and the use of language material aspects.The fourth chapter describes the development and changes of the idiom subsidiary meaning.
