As China opens wider to the outside world, Xinjiang’s political, commercial andacademic engagement with other countries has been on the rise. This leads to largerdemand of translators. As more of such engagements are conducted amonghigh-profile people, translators need to become better qualified. This report aims toanalyze the author’s performance in one task, and draw lessons from it.This particular task is the “US-China Xinjiang Energy&Rail IndustryCooperation Forum, which has the participation of a commercial delegation led bythe US Ambassador to China and some Chinese enterprises and government officialsfrom related fields. I was presented as an interpreter of one American delegate.During his two-day visit, I served multiple tasks including liaison interpreting,whispering interpreting and consecutive interpreting.This report consists of four parts. The first part gives introduction to the Forumand the major tasks. The second part is about preparations. The third part is the mainbody of this report, which illustrates problems and solutions during the task. The lastpart shows what lessons were drawn from the whole interpreting practice.
