The Interpretive Theory, founded by Danica Seleskovitch and Marianne Lederer, holds thatthe goal of interpretation is to convey the meaning, emotion and attitude of the speaker and toremove obstacles of communication.Guided by the Interpretive Theory, particularly its core idea of deverbalization, this paperconducts comparative analysis on the tactics to achieve deverbalization in English-Chinesesimultaneous interpretation. Four second-year postgraduate students from MTI major are chosenas the research subjects and speeches from training materials as the research material. Throughresearch and comparison, it is found that addition, simplification and creation are conducive toachieve deverbaliztion in English-Chinese SI. Due to time-limitedness of simultaneousinterpretation, interpreters may have to omit less important and repeated expressions to convey thekey message. Due to the fact that Chinese is Sino-Tibetan language and English is Indo-Europeanlanguage, interpreters should add some supplementary information or conjunctions to facilitate theprocess of understanding between the speaker and the audience. Meanwhile, interpreters shouldnot be constrained by the structure of English, but grasp the meaning of the speaker so that theaudience can follow the speaker more effectively.The above tactics are conducive in achieving deverbalization in English-Chinesesimultaneous interpretation and provide some guidance for future training and practice.
