The Linguistics for Multimedia Design (LMD) is a new discipline which hasemerged in recent years. Its theoretical framework involves both fields of linguistics andmultimedia. The construction of this new discipline provides the theoretical foundationfor the development of multimedia teaching materials worldwide, which can alsocontribute to the specification of multimedia design language, in accordance with itsbasic theories. Chinese scholars have already revealed the essential attributes andcharacteristics of multimedia design language from the perspective of CognitiveLinguistics.The aim of English multimedia courseware design is to provide an effectivelanguage learning tool, therefore its design should not detach from the linguistic theory.However, this problem has not been paid enough attention, and has become one of themajor causes of poor quality of English multimedia courseware. Scholars have studiedthe rules of multimedia courseware design from the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics,but the study in the field of LMD is rare.The thesis divides the elements of LMD into four categories including image,screen text, audio media (including moving image-video), and interactive function inthe theory framework of LMD. The author utilized materials from professional projectsduring graduate study, and discussed rules of each element in the process of Englishcourseware design. Through studying the literature on these four elements, the authorput forward the "contrast","balance","change" and "highlight" principles for "image";For "the screen text", the author then put forward "readability","suitability" and"artistry" principles for two types of screen text, which are screen text with graphics, aswell as with background; For "the audio media", the author presented design principles from three aspects, including "commentary","background music" and "sound effects";For "interactive function", the design principles on how to use navigation and carry outthe interactive teaching in English courseware were discussed.
