A Report On English-chinese Translation Of The Psychodrama "Walking" With Emphasis On The Translation Of Three Types Of Words

Written by a young American writer Andrew Gordinier,“Walking” is a text with both thenature of novel and the nature of psychodrama. It tells a story of a normal young man: Afterbreaking up with her girlfriend Samantha, the young man forces himself to start a new life.Until one day, he receives a letter from Samantha and realizes that this girl is the mostimportant to him. Then he gives up everything to pursue his true love. He needs to driveacross a desert, in which he meets an old man who almost takes his life and does take hiscar away. After a night’s walking, the young man finds a small town and has something toeat. Lucky enough, he meets a police who helps him get his car back. At the end of the story,he decides to give up smoking and drives to his love.When reading and translating this psychodrama, the author finds that it is very hard totranslate three types of word: characteristic words, implicit words and culture-loaded words.During the process of translation, the biggest problem is how to achieve the sameexpressive effect of these three types of words in the target language and culture as theyhave in the source language and culture. With the help of her supervisor, the author readsmany papers and articles on translation and finds three methods to guide her translation. Theauthor uses the method of characterization to translate characteristic words, uses the methodof iceberg to translate implicit words, and uses the method of no perception obstacles totranslate culture-loaded words. To make it clear, the author will give a brief introduction toeach method in Chapter Three. Thanks to all the help, the author has finally finished hertranslation and this report.The report is divided into five parts: task description, process description, backgroundknowledge, case analysis and conclusion. The task description mainly introduces the sourcetext, its writer and characters in it. The process description respectively presents the pre-translating preparation, translation schedule, translation process and quality control. The background knowledge introduces psychodrama and three methods the author uses in hertranslation. The case study is the major part of this report, which analyzes some specificcases in translating “Walking”. Through this report, the author concludes three methods todeal with three types of words in translating a psychodrama.
