As the global integration process accelerated, Chinese learning present a growingstate. More and more countries and regions pay attention to the Chinese as a foreignlanguage. A related official in the national office for teaching Chinese as a foreignlanguage belonging to the ministry of education of China (hereinafter referred to as"han ban") said,"Chinese fever" has become a common phenomenon in the globallanguage communication system. There is no doubt that this "Chinese fever" on therise has brought an opportunity to promote Chinese teaching in China, but what’s thediscrepancy is that Chinese language teaching has many problems to be solved,including teaching Chinese as a foreign language study is not enough in-depth andimmethodical. In history, the grammar translation method and direct method are thetwo major schools of second language teaching. Both as a representative of thecognition and experience of teaching method, with their distinctive featuresrespectively laid the foundation for later a genre of various teaching methods. They arealso the methods that the using frequency is the highest and the range of teaching is thebroadest in practice of teaching Chinese as a foreign language in our country. So thecontrast analysis of the methods’ background, teaching characteristics, theoretical basis,teaching principles and so on contribute to the deepening of teaching Chinese as aforeign language study and the innovation of the teaching practice. This paper startsfrom the concept of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the theoretical basis andhistorical development, and then I expound the development origin, theorycharacteristics, teaching process and the advantages and disadvantages of these twokinds of teaching method in the time background. Finally I summarize someinspirations for teaching Chinese as a foreign language through the comparative of thetwo methods in Chinese phonetic teaching, oral teaching, vocabulary teaching,grammar teaching and so on.
