This report was based on a series of interrogation interpreting for the Anti-smuggling Bureau of Guangzhou Customs. Interrogation interpreting is a kind ofinterpreting under legal setting. Though court interpreting has a long history,research about interrogation interpreting was not commonly seen. Therefore, basedon the practice, this report tries to probe into this field.Before go in-depth into interrogation interpreting, this report presents a generalpicture of the status quo of the drug trafficking in Guangdong province.The increaseof drug related crime calls for more and more qualified interpreters to serve for theAnti-smuggling Bureau. However, the current situation of interrogation interpretingmarket is not optimistic. Most of the interpreters are not well trained and have noexperience in this field. This is the situation needs to be changed.According to the process of interpreting, the report covers every step includingaccept the task, pre-task preparation, interpreting and assessment. The problemsencountered by the interpreter are closely examined. The features and difficulties areuncovered in task description. Pre-task preparation is based on the features anddifficulties. The challenges met by the interpreter during interpreting and thehandling of interpreter’s roles.The last part is the assessment of the interpreter’sperformance.In addition, the role of interpreter in interrogation interpreting ishighlighted in this report. From the dilemma of interpreter’s roles, we can see thecrying need of research in this field.Based on the features of interrogation interpreting and the workingenvironment, the author put forward that the roles of interrogation interpreter shouldnot only limited as messenger but can even defined as interrogator. However, as abeginner in interpreting, the interpreter’s theory and practice are limited. This reportis a summary of the interpreter for the interpreting practice.
