| This report is based on the author's interpreting practice at the Anti-Smuggling Sub-Bureau of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Customs.After a brief introduction to the background of the interpreting tasks,the cases involved and the interpreter,the author describes the process of interrogation interpreting,including pretask preparation,on-site interpreting and post-task assessment.The author's preparation refers to background preparation and language preparation concerning African English and terminologies.As for on-site interpreting,the author firstly introduces the three interrogation interpreting tasks respectively.Secondly,the author describes the difficulties that arose in the interpreting process,including difficulties in listening comprehension caused by the noisy environment and the suspects' substandard English,and difficulties caused by the tension between the police and the suspects.The author also introduces her coping strategies for these challenges.In terms of post-task assessment,the author provides feedback from the clients and herself.Self-assessment was made based on three criteria,namely accuracy and completeness,delivery and fluency,and impartiality.This report also analyses the discourse role of interrogation interpreters under the guidance of Goffman's “Participation Framework”.The framework is comprised of two parts,the “production format” and the “reception formation”.Under the production format,the interpreter plays the roles of “animator”,“author” and “principle”.Under the reception format,the interpreter plays the roles of “unaddressed recipient” and “addressed recipient”.By examining the practice of interrogation interpreting,the author found that the discourse role of interrogation interpreters was not fixed,but shifted under different circumstances.Each role had different degrees of influence on communication,and the shift of role could be reflected by the pronouns used by the participants of interrogation. |
