| This is a translation report based on Liu Miqing’s stylistic marker theory.The source text of the translation task is an excerpt from the first six chapters of the fantasy novel Bacchanal written by Veronica.G.Henry,an African American writer.Published on May 1st,2021,Bacchanal tells the story of a black American girl joining a mysterious carnival named "Bacchanalp" during the Great Depression The translator hopes to inspire Chinese readers" interest in fantasy literature and provide some reference for the creation of domestic fantasy literature through the introduction of Bacchanal.The translator hopes to provide some inspirational experience for the studies of the stylistic marker theory and the application of the theory to the translation of literary works.Bacchanal falls under the category of fantasy literature.Literary works usually feature a personal touch Debates have been conducted on the translatability of style.It is now generally agreed that though literature style can not be wholly reproduced,it can be reproduced to a large extent in translation.The famous translation theorist Liu Miqing supports the idea that style can be identified and reproduced He comes up with the stylistic marker theory and offers a new perspective for the analysis and translation of style.So the translator decides to choose Liu stylistic marker theory to guide this translation practice.Based on Liu’s stylistic marker theory,the translator analyses the formal markers(register markers,syntactic markers,lexical markers,textual markers,and markers of speech)and non-formal markers(ways of expression)shown in the selected text and reproduces these markers in translation.This translation report consists of five chapters The first chapter gives an introduction to the source text and its author.The significance of choosing this type as the source text is also introduced The second chapter describes the translation process,including the tools,the terminology charts,and the schedule prepared before translation,the strategies adopted,the difficulties and obstacles the translator faces during translation,and the modifications and reviews made after finishing the first draft of the translation report.The third chapter presents the theoretical basis,which includes previous research on style translation and previous studies on fantasy literature,and Liu Miqing’s stylistic marker theory.The fourth chapter offers a detailed analysis of the translation of formal and non-formal markers in Bacchanal.The fifth chapter discusses the reflections and limitations of this report. |
