Business negotiation interpreting, a service provided by an interpreter who translatesduring a business meeting between two or more persons, is a sub-category of liaisoninterpreting. As the meeting involves people from two countries, it is a complexcross-cultural communicative act.In this practice report, the author discusses her own business negotiationinterpreting experience at a bilateral negotiation table in2012. The practice reportdescribes the whole process of the interpreting practice that is divided into thepre-task preparation and on-site performance. Based on the relevant literature review,the author conducts a post-task case analysis from the aspect of the actions theinterpreter takes in the interpreting task. A detailed analysis and categorization of themeasures the author takes in the interpreting task includes expanded renditions,reduced renditions, summarized renditions, zero renditions and intervention. Bysummarizing the author’s interpreting strategies and act, the author will come to aconclusion of what role an interpreter would play in business negotiation interpretingand what measures there will be.The author hopes, through this report, to present to her readers a moresystematic category of the manifestation of interpreter’s role and suggestions ofmeasures they can take in business negotiation interpreting.
