Tenor, main semantic medium of expressing interpersonal metafunction, refers tothe speaker/author’s attitude on the commutative proposition or information. Incontract texts, the relationship between the contracting parties is usually manifested bymodality system. Under the framework of Juliane House’s Functional-PragmaticModel of Translation Evaluation, this thesis will proceed from the three metafuctions, especially interpersonal metafunction of Halliday’s Systemic-Functional Grammar(SFG) to make a case analysis of China Everbright Bank Individual Loan Contract. With the emphasis of analyzing the contract text by interpersonal metafunction oflanguage, a new perspective that is much closer to the nature of language is employedto make a profound analysis on the right relation between the contracting parties. Byquoting plenty of examples and dissecting by the parameters under House’s model andthe three dimensions: field, tenor and mode, the translation approaches and strategiesof the translation of modality system in contract texts are comprehensively analyzed inorder to provide a theoretical interpretation on contract translation, especially thetranslation of modality system.
