Abstract/Summary:
Sight translation, a hybrid of written translation and interpreting, is a translationmode in which the interpreter receives textual information from the source languagebut reproduces the source information orally in the target language. In practice, theinterpreter must respond quickly to the source language sentence patterns under timeconstraints, so syntactic linearity has long been the working principle of sighttranslation. Owing to syntactic differences between Chinese and English, theinterpreter is usually faced with difficulties in sight translating typical Chinesesentence patterns under the principle of syntactic linearity. With an investigation onthree typical Chinese sentence patterns, namely Chinese subjectless sentences, passive sentences and conditional sentences, this thesis is intended to elaborate onthe features of the three Chinese sentence patterns, expound on the difficulties insight translating them, and analyze the reasons for the difficulties in the hope to findout feasible techniques through an inductive study to address the difficulties.
