With the rapid development of Chinese economy, China’s domestic market is growingrapidly; more and more products are imported into China with the purpose of meeting thedomestic needs of many consumers. Drug is a special commodity. China’s annual imports ofmedicines are very large. As an important attachment of drug package insert it aroused moreand more attention. For the patients, reading the instructions is the first step before takingmedicine. A correct translation helps patients understand how to take the medicines, but awrong translation will mistake patients to take wrong medicines. So the instructions’translation of the imported medicines is very important. A good translation of thepharmaceutical instruction can increase consumer or patient’s satisfaction, and enhancecorporate image; contrary, rough, obscure instructions will result in serious consequences anddamage corporate image. In recent years, due to the importance of the instruction recognizedby people and businesses, more and more people and companies start to focus on the study ofinstructions’ translation. However, we have to admit that many problems still exist in thetranslation of the imported medicines, such as inappropriate translation, mistranslation andword-for-word translation. All of them may mistake customs or patients buy the wrongmedicine and lead to a serious result.This thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter one is a general introduction to thebackground and purpose of the study; presents the significance of the study and the structureof the thesis. Chapter Two gives a brief review of the Skopostheorie, its development and themajor principles. Chapter Three introduces writing style of the Pharmaceutical Instructions,purpose of the Pharmaceutical Instructions and the differences between Chinese Pharmaceutical Instructions and English Pharmaceutical Instructions. The text ofpharmaceutical instructions has special features, including its unusual lexicon, text structureand style. In this chapter, the thesis discusses it. Chapter Four Apply the Skopostheorie to theChinese Translation of English Pharmaceutical Instructions. Abundant examples are providedto analyze and summarize translation strategy form the view of Skopostheorie. Chapter Fiveis a conclusion about the major findings of this thesis and some suggestions for furtherresearch.This paper discusses the purpose of the pharmaceutical instructions. It appliesSkopostheorie to the E-C Translation of the Pharmaceutical Instructions.
