On Translation Of Metaphors In Tang Poems From The Perspective Of Self-negotiation Principle

The Self-negotiation principle provides an elucidatory perspective on metaphortranslation. In the view of the Self-negotiation principle, a metaphor translator has twoidentifications, the metaphor addressee and the addresser. No matter which identificationhe possesses, he is supposed to undertake self-negotiation. As a metaphor addressee, thetranslator needs to go through three mechanisms, washing, linking and converging, so asto make the source domain and the target domain compatible with each other. As ametaphor addresser, the translator needs to take cultural tradition, social knowledge,insights and perception of readers of source language into consideration to find out themost proper and accurate source domain in the target language context, which enables themetaphor more appropriate to meet readers’ cognitive operation.Tang poems are abundant with metaphors. Since Tang poems are undeniably anindispensable part of Chinese culture, its translation has aroused increasing attention fromhome and abroad. It is reckoned that the success of metaphor translation determines thesuccess of overall translation of Tang poems to a large extent. The present thesis focuseson the research into the translation of metaphors in Tang poems in the light of theSelf-negotiation principle. The working mechanisms and the application of theSelf-negotiation in translation will also be discussed in the following parts. Finally, underthe guidance of Self-negotiation principle, certain practical and appropriate translationmethods are proposed, namely wholly retaining the original source domain, partiallyretaining the original source domain as well as substituting the original source domain inthe target metaphor.
