This is a translation report, with the Preface, Chapter1and Chapter2of the book Patent Law Essentials:a Concise Guide (third edition) written by Alan L. Durham, professor in the University of Alabama School of Law, as its material for research. This book, as a legal textbook on American patent law, aims at providing a concise guide for the lawyers and laymen who want to acquire some knowledge about patent law. The language used in this book is quite professional and popular, through which once strict logics are accurately conveyed. The content of this book emphasizes essentials of patent law, but it also glitters with enlightenment. It also covers a large number of cases to better explain the ideas on patent law. So this book is of great value to read and translate.This report mainly discusses the translation theories and principles applied to the translating process, and makes further study on the difficulties encountered in the translating process, proposing some of the strategies and methods the author used to cope with these problems. In the end, this report summarizes, from a macroscopic view, this entire translation project, specifically on the preparation before translating and on problems still waiting to be addressed. In protection of the original author’s copyright, this translation project is only to be used for the purpose of translation teaching and study, to test the author’s translating level and to check for problems in translating process.
