With the expansion of China’s foreign trade scale, patent barrier has become an increasingly important issue to the manufacturing industry in China, which caused the same importance on the translation of legal texts on patent right license. The Digital Transmission Protection License Agreement (Excerpts) is a practical text with defined purposes and a standard license agreement published by a patent licensing administrator on its website. Based on the study of background information and analysis of the original text, the author attempts to apply certain translation theory to the practical translation task, and illustrate with practical examples. The task is aimed to conclude the difficulties and put forward corresponding translating approaches, in order to provide reference for the translation tasks of the same kind in the future.This report is divided into five parts. The first part is the task description, which includes introduction of text content and presentation of the significance. The second part introduces the task process, including preliminary preparation, translation procedures and means of quality control. The third part is about Newmark’s translation theory and the standard for translating legal texts. The fourth part presents examples and analysis, which covers:(a) the adoption of industry matching, addition of words and shift of word property in the translation of words; (b) translation examples of passive voice; (c) features of long and complex sentences and the application of certain translation methods, such as translation following the original order, translation with a changed order and separation of certain sentence constituents; and (d) context connection and re-organization. The fifth part concludes enlightenment and inadequacy during the translation.
