Legal Term Translation

The source text in this translation practice was selected from the book Justice,Justice Thou Shalt Pursue,a collaboration between the Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Professor Amanda Tyler.As the second female Justice in the United States Supreme Court,Justice Ginsburg holds an irreplaceable position in the history of American law,civil rights,and gender equality.The book covers transcripts of oral arguments and the Court’s opinions of the cases attended by Ginsburg.It is a typical legal text with a high level of professionalism.One of its notable features is its precise and formal language,which uses a large number of legal terms,posing challenges for reading,understanding,and translating.If these terms are translated improperly,the accuracy and professionalism of the translation will be diminished.Based on a careful analysis of the translated text,this report summarizes four translation strategies:translating terms with terms,adding explanatory annotations,translating polysemous words in context,and following standardized translation of legal citations,and discusses in details based on relevant literature.For each strategy,several examples are selected for further analysis,fully demonstrating that the application of these strategies ensures the accuracy of the translation and preserves the professionalism of the legal text.Through translation practice and case analysis,this report summarizes the translation methods applicable to the project text.Legal term translation requires translators to be equipped with legal knowledge,fully understand the connotations of the terms in different legal systems,and translate them flexibly based on the context.This report is expected to to provide some reference for the translation of other legal texts and enrich researches on the translation of legal terms.
