Medical English is one important branch of English for Specific Purpose (ESP), whichaims at one engaged in medical treatment and health service. With the rapid development ofmedicine, medical English education is paid more attention. In terms of current medicalEnglish teaching, its teaching level is not high on the whole, so the teaching effect of medicalEnglish is not good. In order to change the situation, using modern education technology tooptimize medical English teaching is necessary.In the light of the disadvantages of teaching medical English under multimediaenvironment and advantages under multimedia network environment, the paper aims atdemonstrating the effectiveness of multimedia and multimedia network environments inmedical English teaching by means of comparative study design on the basis ofconstructivism.65students are selected from two different classes in Traditional Chinese Medicine ofHunan University. There are32students in Class one and33students in class two. The paperis an empirical study, aiming at exploring the effectiveness of medical English teaching undertwo types of environments: multimedia network environment and multimedia environmentonly. The empirical study adopts the comparative study between the two groups. The subjectsin the Class one are taught under multimedia network environment; the subjects in the Classtwo are taught under multimedia environment.The study lasts over five months. It explores four questions as follows:1) Is multimediaenvironment different from multimedia network environment in the effectiveness on medicalEnglish teaching? If so, what factors lead to the difference?2) Is there any difference in theprogress of sub skills under multimedia environment and multimedia network environment?If so, what factors lead to the result?3) Which environment are the subjects more inclined tostudy in?4) Which environment results in better performance in the retention of medicalEnglish knowledge?The study collects the data via pre-test, post-test, questionnaires and interviews. Andthen it analyzes the data by using SPSS13.0. According to quantitative and qualitativeanalysis, the main findings are shown as follows:Firstly, multimedia network environment does facilitate students· medical Englishteaching more effectively and give rise to significant variance of the achievement. Becauseunder multimedia network environment, we can share the network education resources in thelargest extension and it realizes the combination teacher·s teaching with network teaching. Then personalized learning and collaborative learning and self-monitoring and the monitoringfrom the teacher can be strengthened.Secondly, we can summarize the part of listening, reading, translation and writing formedical English get performed better under multimedia network environment. As for thelistening part, students can not only choose some contents to make some listening practicesaccording to their interest but also they can listen to the listening exercises in class over andover again until they understand. As for the reading, translation and writing part, the studentsunder multimedia network environment can get in touch with medical science easily. Studentscan read what they what to read and then students can not only improve their reading abilitybut also writing ability with some writing format and specification. What·s more, the teachercan choose some passages to let students do some translation exercises to improve theirtranslation ability.Third, according to medical students· view, they have shown that they tend to study inmultimedia network environment.Finally, multimedia network environment does result in better performance in theretention of students· medical English knowledge.The paper reveals some implications for the same study in the future. But the results ofthe study must have some limitations for the experimental condition, experimental time andinexperience. With the rapid development of courseware and information technology, medicalEnglish teaching under multimedia network environment will be prospective. The authorhopes more research can be conducted to explore it.
