A Report On The Application Of Communication Strategies During Business Interpretation

This report is intended to present how the author used communication strategies to deal with the problems arising in one of her interpretation practices.The task is one business interpretation. A process description of the business trip is given, introducing preparatory work, preliminary communication, the reception, the business meeting, the banquet and the wrap-up work. Some issues the author encountered during the process are detailed. Then there is a brief introduction of communication strategies that can be used to solve the problems. Three scenarios are used to illustrate the application of specific communication strategies, namely repeating strategy, cooperative strategy, nonlinguistic strategy, paraphrase strategy. The author also expresses some reflections on the application of communication strategies in her interpreting practice. Lastly, client feedback and the author’s self evaluation are presented.Proper application of communication strategies is helpful in solving problems caused by linguistic deficiency during interpreting and the application of some communication strategies should be encouraged in order to achieve smooth communication, especially for inexperienced interpreters.
