Having been interested and often discussed among all calligraphers, the relationship between one’s character and her calligraphy works is also considered to be epitome of personal features and artistic style on calligraphy. As one of the core propositions of calligraphic theory,"Calligraphy-person Resemblance" has significant importance on both assessment of one’s achievement and future development of the field.Raised by Xiong Yang in Xi Han Dynasty, the proportion of "handwriting is drawing of one’s heart" is the earliest tractable theory source of "Calligraphy-person Resemblance". Based on the mixed artistic view of Confucian school which is represented by Confucius and Mencius and Taoist school which is represented by Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu, this proportion had grown up at a turning period for Xi Han Dynasty from prosperity to decline. With the developing of ancient Chinese society and arising and vanishing of different artistic thoughts,"Calligraphy-person Resemblance" has been improving and consummating and exhibited different theoretical characteristics and patterns at different time. While calligraphy in Han Wei and Six-dynasty period emphasized emphasis on natural endowment and life imagery, calligraphers in Sui Dynasty and Tang Dynasty paid much more attention on emotional expression and empirical functioning. In addition to the moral courage and self-cultivation pursued in Song and Yuan, artists in Qing and Ming more strove for personality liberation and introspected "like calligrapher like handwriting" under multicultural striking.Changing and developing all the time, the concept of "Calligraphy-person Resemblance" reflects the intrinsicity and rationality of the aesthetic pursuits of that time. Thought of "Calligraphy-person Resemblance" brings the new dimension for calligraphy aesthetic, while enriching objects in calligraphy aesthetic, it innovates new ways of artistic conveyance, keeps the diversity of calligraphy styles, and defines proper aesthetic distance in calligraphy appreciation, it is an epitome of continuous development and deepening in calligraphy theory. However, lacking of clear demarcations on artist versus reality, ideological contents versus form of expression, aesthetic standard and moral commitment,"Calligraphy-person Resemblance" cannot be considered as general standard in measuring and assessing all calligraphers and calligraphy works.
