During the past decade power generation has undergone several extremely significant changes in China. At present, thermal power plants account for about80percent of total electricity generation. Thus thermal power plant plays a big role in power generating in our country. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is to translate the original English text into Chinese. The original text is chosen from Chapter1and Chapter12of Thermal Power Plant Simulation and Control. Thermal power plant simulation and control was written in English which was edited by Damian Flynn and was published by The Institution of Engineering and Technology in Britain in2003. The second part is the critical commentary of the translation. In this part the translator will analyze the features of the original text, including lexical features, syntactic features and discourse features. This critical commentary discusses problems that the translator has encountered and how the translator has solved them successfully. The experiences and skills during the translation process can be a reference to the future translators when dealing with the English to Chinese translation concerning English for electric power technology (EEPT).The critical commentary covers three parts. The first part introduces the translating project, including the significance and the background of this project. This part also gives a brief synopsis of the original text, its characteristics are analyzed. The second part introduces the translation process and summarizes difficulties that the translator has faced before and during the translation process. This part also tells how the translator solved these problems at both lexical and syntactical levels by a series of translation strategies. These translation strategies include literal translation, liberal translation and amplification. The last part sums up the experiences and limitation of this project. Suggestions about EEPT’s E-C translation are given in this part. Combining with practical experiences, the critical commentary systematically summarizes aspects that should be noted in EEPT’s E-C translation, as well as corresponding skills and strategies for a better translation.
