A Translation Report On The Power Of Change:Innovation For Development And Deployment Of Increasingly Clean Electric Power Technologies(Chapter 5)

This paper includes two parts:translation report and translation.The translation material is Chapter 5 of The Power of Change:Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Electric Power Technologies.This text was published by National Academy of Sciences in the U.S.in 2016,and no Chinese version of the selected material has been found yet.The translated material mainly focuses on clean electric power technologies and Chapter 5 of this book analyzes the challenges of developing nuclear,carbon capture and storage and renewable fuel power and the corresponding recommendations.In order to help Chinese readers have a better understanding about the challenges of the development and deployment of clean electric power technologies,and also to improve the translation skills of science and technology text,the translator chooses Chapter 5 of this book as her translation material and research object.The translation report consists of five chapters.Chapter One introduces background and significance of the translation project.Chapter Two is the introduction to the source text,including the content and linguistic characteristics of the source text.As a science and technology text on clean electric power technologies,the selected material contains many terminologies and abbreviations at lexical level,while at syntactic level long and complex sentence and passive voice frequently occur.Chapter Three reviews the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,while-translation and quality control of the target text.The preparation work contains reading parallel text,selecting translation tools and Nida's functional equivalence theory as the theoretical guidance of this report.Chapter Four is case analysis.Under the theoretical guidance,the translator uses the translation methods of conversion,selection of word meaning and amplification to translate the source text on lexical level.She also provides analysis of the translation of long and complicated sentence and passive voice,achieving the equivalence to the source text in terms of meaning and style.Chapter Five summarizes the enlightenment and experience learned in the translation process.This translation practice not only increases the translator's understanding of functional equivalence theory and science and technology text,but also makes the translator realize that preparations before translation,a solid language foundation and a conscientious attitude are the necessary requirements for a good translation.
