A Report On Selected Translation Of The Way Toward Popularization Of Life Education Today

This graduation project is a partial translation of the essay The Way toward Popularization of Life Education Today by Tao Xingzhi. The education campaign Tao advocated still enlightens the educational reform in modern society, as education is still to some extent separated from life, theories from practice, and school from society. This project can introduce to the outside the educational conditions in China at the beginning of the20th century and the educational campaigns Chinese scholars carried out accordingly by combining Dewey’s life education theory with the particular educational condition in China.Since plenty of figures of speech are employed in the Chinese original to explain education predicaments and in most cases the tenor or the vehicle is omitted, translation of such figurative sentences taxes my abilities: if they are translated word by word, the translation will turn out incoherent and inaccessible. In this translation report, such sentences will be selected and sorted out, and approaches to translating such sentences will be proposed and then generalized. For translation of analogical sentences with an implicit tenor, the tenor must be clarified and transitional words and phrases shall be added for the sake of clarity and coherence; for translation of metaphoric sentences with an implied vehicle, the vehicle must be clarified and similarity between the tenor and the vehicle must be figured out, so that the extended meaning of the figurative sentences can be deciphered.
