With the development of the world’s globalization, the lease agreement helps a lot inpromoting bilateral economic cooperation. A contract set by different countries needs to betranslated accurately into bilingual or multilingual texts. As a lease agreement is actually a legaltext, the expression of it is very accurate and rigorous, it contains lots of technical terms andcomplex structures. It’s difficult to translate a lease agreement. When translating the lease contract Heydenrych Notorial Lease Agreement, I find that thereare many verbal nominalizations in this agreement. Sentences containing such a structureaccount for over90%of the total number of sentences. I find the appropriate translations of thesenominalizations contribute to the successful translation of the whole contract, so the translationskills and strategies of verbal nominalizations are important. I conduct my study from threeaspects: the bare nominalizations translation, nominalization phrases translation, the sentencescontaining nominalizations translation.Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory is chosen as a guidiance to my practice. The theoryadvocates the recipients’ response to the translation text is basic equivalent to the originalrecipients’ response to the original text. The theory points out in translation, translators mustseek for closely related and natural equivalent language in the target language. In general, inorder to express the content fully, one may change the original form of expression. The theoryworks as a guidiance for my translation study.Under the guidiance of Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, I find that most of the barenominalizations are translated into nouns, namely their part of speech was not changed. Phrasesoften translated into different forms of Chinese phrases, which mainly are Chinese verb-objectphrase, subject-predicate phrases, prepositional phrases, short sentences or other forms. Freetranslation method, anastrophe, epexege are used in sentence translation. This report consists of four parts. The first chapter introduces the linguistic characteristicsof this contract and the source of it. The second chapter is about the translation process, whichincluds preparation stage, translating the contranct stage and quality control stage. The thirdchapter shows some translation examples, in which I analyze these nominalization structures andintroduce some translation skills and strategies. The fourth chapter contains my feelings andlesson learned through this practice.
