On Impediments Encountered In Listening Comprehension And Coping Strategies

With the continuous development of economic globalization andimproving trade frequency between China and Kazakhstan, the two leadershave signed many agreements with partnerships in many areas. Thecommunication between the two countries requires talents with high level oftranslating ability because Kazakhstan’s official language is Russian.However, the listening comprehension ability of the interpreters directlyaffects the communication between the people of the two countries.The listening in interpretation is different from that in other occasions. Itrequires an interpreter not only to understand the speech content of thespoken source language, but also to understand, conclude, and organize itinto the target language in a short time and finally convey to the listenersaccurately and fluently. If a problem occurs in the process of listeningcomprehension, but the interpreter is not be able to convey accurately, thequality of interpretation will be greatly affected. This paper, which based onthe example of Consecutive Interpretation of "the Sino-Kazakh scholars’prospects on the use of renewable energy in South Kazakhstan region jointdevelopment of small thermal power plants ", analyzes the impediment in theprocess of listening, discuss how to overcome it and find the copingstrategies.This thesis consists of three chapters:The first chapter discusses the special nature and importance of listening comprehension.The second chapter summarizes listening impediments encountered in theprocess of interpretation, verbal and nonverbal impediments. Verbalimpediments exist in basic knowledge of Russian include (a) voice: theinterpreters fail to pronounce a special sound grasp and impact listeningquality;(b)tone: interpreters are not familiar with Russian intonation and thataffects the quality of translation;(c)vocabulary: any interpreters, even withlarge vocabulary, will encounter new words, but if they tangle with thosewords, the progress of listening comprehension will be seriously affected;(d)grammar: lack of grammar can seriously affect the interpreters’ listeningcomprehension. Non-verbal impediments can also largely affect interpreters’listening comprehension, they are (a) psychological impediments:psychological weakness makes the interpreters not work as normal;(b) theinsufficient cultural background and Knowledge reserve: lack of languageknowledge will affect interpreters’ listening comprehension;(C) the lack ofshort-term memory ability and interpreter training;(D) large speechdensity: the speaker ’s speech affect the listening comprehension.The third chapter proposes coping strategies for interpretingimpediments encountered in the process of listening comprehension,including: basic knowledge of the Russian language tamp; developing goodpsychological diathesis; strengthening cultural background knowledge andlearning; strengthening short-term memory; learning to catch the key words.
