Both professional interpreters and student interpreters will adopt some strategies when problem triggers appear, yet quantitative study in this thesis shows that student interpreters lag far behind professional interpreters in terms of main message interpreting. That is because the two groups of interpreters differ in the choices of strategies and the reasons behind their choices. Therefore,it is quite necessary for them to identify the gaps with professional interpreters and how professional interpreters would mobilize their interpreting strategies in professional assignments.Based on the recordings and transcripts of 9 interpreters, this thesis summarized 6 kinds of frequently used coping tactics and analyzed different reasons behind interpreters' choices through qualitative analysis. The study finds that a)problem triggers have greater impacts on student interpreters over professional interpreters and will widen the gap between the two types of interpreters;b)when confronting an array of problem triggers, professional interpreters act more proactively to overcome the difficulty, while student interpreters resort to some strategies due to the time lag, inability to convert the source language into the target language or overloaded cognitive burden;c)professional interpreters can mobilize different strategies while student interpreters tend to depend on a certain coping tactic, which might leads to heavy losses of the source information. This thesis can help student interpreters find where their problems are and also provide helpful suggestions to both practicing and teaching.
