It is known to all that simultaneous interpreting has been used widely since the second world war. It plays a significant role in international communication. This thesis analyzes the effectiveness of syntactic linearity in simultaneous interpreting. The thesis begins with the importance of syntactic linearity in simultaneous interpreting and summarizes the existing study on it. Then the author uses Gile’s Effort Model to analyze one simulated simultaneous interpreting task. The simulation task is based on the Work Report of the Government delivered by former premier Wen Jiabao at the First Session of the Twelfth National People’s Congress on March5,2013.The thesis first analyzes the speech, which is followed by the description of the corresponding advance preparation and the process of task completion. Afterwards the interpreter analyzes the effective and ineffective use of Syntactic Linearity Principle with Effort Model. The analysis indicates that the use of Syntactic Linearity Principle in Simultaneous Interpreting should be based on the comprehension of the source language in order to coordinate all aspects in interpreting. At the same time, the use of Syntactic Linearity Principle in Simultaneous Interpreting should be cooperated with other interpreting principles during the whole interpreting process in order to help reproduce a smooth interpreting. What’s more, the interpreter should be familiar with some fixed expressions to save efforts and make an effective use of Syntactic Linearity Principle.
