| Simultaneous interpreting(SI)appeared at the end of the First World War,and has been diffusely adopted in various kinds of international conferences ever since,due to its advantages of time saving and transmission efficiency.As a complex cognitive process,simultaneous interpreting requires a relatively high capacity for interpreters to allocate cognitive resources.Cognitive activities,including listening and analysis,short-term memory,and production,are activated synchronously in the process of simultaneous interpreting,thus Syntactic Linearity and its multiple tactics are followed and applied by interpreters to reduce heavy cognitive burdens,and the quality of simultaneous interpreting,thus,can be improved.The thesis has been completed under the guidance of Gile's Effort Model of SI,by adopting the methodology of literature analysis and case study,a case study of 2016 president Obama's State of the Union Address has been conducted to discuss necessities of applying Syntactic Linearity Principle under the guidance of Effort Model in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting.Meanwhile,Tactics of Syntactic Linearity,including segmentation,repetition,supplementation,conversion,and omission are summarized by analyzing its application in various complex syntactic structures,such as attributive clause,adverbial clause,noun clause,passive voice,and formal subject"it".Interpreting studies,especially simultaneous interpreting studies,are still in an initial phase in China.However,with the deepening and development of globalization,needs for talents in this field are increasing,and relevant researches show diversity accordingly.Simultaneous interpreting studies from the perspective of cognitive science inevitably become the main trend,for the practice is characterized by its multi-tasking nature.Generally speaking,the study is a combination of theory and practice,and it is hopefully to provide some useful suggestions to interpreting researchers and learners. |
