A Project Report On Translation Of Binyang Firecracker Dragon Dance Carnival—the Eastern Carnival(Chapter Ⅰ)

Culture, the soul of a nation, is a part of soft power. Guangxi is a multi-ethnic region boasting rich folk culture whose preservation and dissemination is of great importance. This report is on the C-E translation of the first chapter of Binyang Firecracker Dragon Dance Carnival--the Eastern Carnival, the first book to relate the folk culture in details. The translation project is part of the project jointly launched by the Publicity Division of Binyang Party Committee and the Foreign Languages College of Guangxi University, aiming to publicize the peculiar folk culture of the Binyang Firecracker Dragon Dance Carnival, preserve Chinese folk culture and enrich the world culture.The author is assigned to translate the first chapter of the book in17days. The translation purposes of the project categorize its translation into publicity translation, focusing on culture dissemination, whose difficulties lie in translating culture-loaded terms, Chinese-featured sentences and rhetorics. Under the guidance of Spivak’s translation ideas about strangeness and surrendering, different translation strategies are applied to solve different problems.Through this project, the author realizes that, to undertake a translation project efficiently, various factors, like human and material resources, time limit, task allocation, quality control and capability evaluation, should be taken into consideration, thorough pre-translation analysis and preparation is of great significance, and a glossary is extremely helpful; that strange expressions are inevitable in cultural translation, and they play a crucial part in preserving and disseminating Chinese folk culture, as well as bringing readerships pleasure, beauty and attraction; and that presenting the carnival’s thrilling scenes and its profound culture implications should be the priority in its translation.On the basis of translation experience in this project, it is hoped that strategies applied to solve various translation problems not only preserve culture elements but also meet foreign readers’expectation, so as to provide a new perspective for studies on translating Chinese folk culture and ultimately facilitate the translation output of Chinese culture soft power.
