After a long history, eleven indigenous ethnic minorities gradually formed in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, namely Zhuang, Yao, Miao, Dong, Mulao, Maonan, Jing, Hui, Yi, Shui and Gelao. Each ethnic minority boasts rich folk literature, mainly reflecting in folk mythologies, fairy stories, folk legends and folk tales, which widely spread among minority people in the form of oral transmission. This report is based on C-E translation of Collection of Ethnic Stories of Guangxi (referred to as "the Ethnic Stories"). The Ethnic Stories is planned to be published in the United States, therefore, its translation belongs to translation for international publicity. This translation project is of great practical significance to the preservation and international publicity of ethnic cultures of Guangxi. The Ethnic Stories contain rich contents, such as folk songs, culture-specific words with characteristics of ethnic minorities, culture-loaded words and Chinese enigmatic folk similes. Due to the unique geographical conditions, history and culture, life style and customs, these words feature regional characteristics and carry rich cultural connotation, without existing corresponding words in English. If these words are translated inappropriately, the effect of the international publicity of Guangxi ethnic cultures may be greatly weaken. The report focuses on analyzing these words, putting forward adoptable translation methods, namely transliteration with notes, free translation and literal translation with notes, which not only preserve their cultural information, but also make the translated text more readable. It is hoped that the report can provide reference for other translators in translating these kinds of words.
