Report On Translation Project----2013China-ASEAN Vocational Education Exhibition And Forum

With the holding of China-ASEAN Expo, the cooperation and development between China and ASEAN countries has been deepened. This report is on a translation project which the author fulfilled during the2013China-ASEAN Vocational Education Exhibition and Forum. The project is English to Chinese translation composed of two parts:1) the speech drafts delivered by the Southeast Asian countries’leaders;2) the introduction manual to the TVET system in the SEAMEO member countries. The project aims at introducing the vocational education development and experience in the ASEAN countries, to promote the cooperation and exchange of vocational education in Guangxi, and to accelerate the development of modern vocational education in the region. The author hopes to offer some references of the English to Chinese translation in the field of vocational education.The report describes the translation process in sequence of text analysis, preparation before translation, translation strategy election, problems coming across in translating and the solutions. The author makes a pre-analysis in the text type and style, the linguistic features, the writers and the target readers, and then selects Newmark’s Communicative Translation as the translation strategy according to Newmark’s Text Typology translation theory, thus the translation criterion and guideline that the translation should be accurate and meet the usages of Chinese is set up. Under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory and strategy, the author solves the problems, such as the translation of proper nouns and long sentences, the adoption of the format and style with reference to parallel texts, select and translation, division and free translation. At last, the author makes the translation more accurate and suitable for the Chinese usages to meet the needs the distinguished guests and to promote communication among them.
